Reducing Stroke Risk – The Positive Effect of Regular Exercise

It’s commonly known that regular exercise has a positive effect on your health. A recent study, published in the American Heart Association’s journal “Stroke”, showed that the stroke risk significantly decreases as a result of engaging in physical activity on a regular basis.

Details of the study

In a medical and behavioral research study by the American Heart Association, scientists examined the relation between physical activity and the risk of suffering a stroke. More than 27,000 Americans, aged 45 years and older, were followed during a five to seven years period. After analysing the results, the scientists concluded that inactive people (i.e. those who exercise less than once a week) have an increased risk of suffering a stroke. They are 20 percent more likely to experience a stroke than active people (those who exercise approximately four times a week at moderate or vigorous intensity).

Sport is the best medicine

According to Michelle McDonnell, Ph.D., one of the study’s authors, the stroke-lowering benefits of regular exercise are related to the effects of sport on other risk factors. “Exercise reduces blood pressure, weight and diabetes. If exercise was a pill, you would be taking one pill to treat four or five different conditions,” said Donnell. The study’s results support previous findings that proved physical inactivity to be the second biggest risk factor for stroke, after high blood pressure.

Motivation to exercise regularly

The American Heart Association recommends healthy adults between 18 and 65 years, who exercise on moderate-intensity, to do this at least 30 minutes a day, five times a week. This can be replaced by a 20-minutes work-out on vigorous-intensity three times a week. However, most of the time, the biggest problem is to stay motivated to follow a regular exercise programme.
