Healthy and Green – World Environment Day 2013
Nowadays, environmental protection is more important than ever. Fortunately, more and more people follow the green trend. The official World Environment Day 2013 is on June 5th and aims at raising awareness for our environment and its protection. We tell you the key facts about the “Green Day” and some tips for a more environmentally friendly everyday life.
What’s the World Environment Day about?
This day has its origin in the opening day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm on June 5th in 1972. The UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) officially declared this date as World Environment Day. It’s the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. Every year, about 150 states participate. The motto 2013 is: “Think.Eat.Save.” and is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign.
Actively support environmental protection
The question is: What can I do to help? In order to do your bit in regard to save the environment, little adjustments in daily life are already a good start. Here some tips:
Choose wisely at the supermarket
To consciously chose your food certainly sounds easy, but turns out to be trickier than you think. The supermarket offers a wide range of tasty and tempting products; and at home, you often have a bunch of foods which you don’t really need, and even sometimes throw away in the end. So think carefully about what you need, before you go in the supermarket. Fresh, seasonal vegetables and fruits not only benefit your health and weight management; mostly, they also produce less packaging waste than all the foods wrapped in plenty of plastic and cans.
Active against fumes
Driving in a car is comfortable and fast, but unfortunately also expensive and harming for the environment. So how about replacing the four wheels against just two and riding the bike? Or even walking to your destination on shorter distances? Again, that’s not only good for the environment, but also for your own body. You decide yourself whether you want to be fast or rather slow. On top of that, strolling through the green nature shows you exactly why it’s worth it to live a “greener” life.
