Running with Hay Fever – Tips and Tricks
Spring always lets nature appear in its brightest and most joyous colours. But the beautiful scenery also has some disadvantages, especially for people suffering from hay fever: The nose is running and the eyes are watering. As a result, many runners have a hard time training outdoors. We give you some hints and tricks for running units in nature despite hay fever.
Is that good for me?
First of all, sales it’s important to find out if athletes should run when suffering from allergies or hay fever. Since every case needs different treatment, you should talk to your doctor about it. As endurance sport, running not only trains leg musculature but also the lungs. The larger lung volume can improve breathing capacity in the long term.
When is the best time for running?
The best time for running is definitely after it had been raining. The pollens are “washed away” and the moist air makes it easier to breath during training. Very dry, windy days, on the other hand, should be avoided by runners with hay fever. In spring, it’s better to run on big open spaces rather than in forests. Starting in June, the opposite is true: Large meadows and pasture fields are dangerous.
After running – Wash and clean
Taking a shower after training is not only pleasant and relaxing; it also washes away remaining particles of pollens. Also, don’t let your clothes lay around in the house for too long; put them in the washing machine to prevent a “pollen attack” at home. Since pollen can also hide under and on the running shoes, you should also remember to clean them.
What to do when it’s too late?
As soon as you feel difficulties in breathing due to pollens, you should stop running. It doesn’t do any good when you train without sufficient oxygen in your lungs, as this can lead to fainting or hyperventilating. It always comes in handy to have a small nebulizer to use; before taking chemical medication. The perfect companion is Omron’s MicroAir. This portable, pocketsize inhaler not only works efficiently, but also silently. On top of that, it delivers 4 hours of nebulization time on two batteries. So you don’t need to recharge after every treatment.
