Runner’s High – The Sudden Feeling of Elation
You’re in the middle of a strenuous run, drained of energy and close to exhaustion. But then it happens: Out of the blue, you’re surprised by a feeling of elation. Close to your physical and mental limits only moments before, you suddenly feel euphoric and forget about the pain. That’s the runner’s high. Euphoria, ecstasy and adrenaline – The exceptional neurochemical condition mobilises unexpected reserves of strength. “I was running like crazy,” euphoric athletes say afterwards. We track down the mysterious phenomenon and explain how runners reach this state.
Breaking the pain barrier
Runner’s high develops and feels differently for each person individually. Some athletes never experience it, some in very dissimilar ways. But to feel this total euphoria, it takes an extremely high intensity of physical strain. With relaxed endurance runs or short distances, you’ll fail to reach this state. Only overcoming your pain barrier makes a runner’s high possible. But even long and intensive exertion cannot guarantee the adrenaline kick – neither for beginners nor experienced runners.
What happens in the body?
Endorphins are the key to unravel the mystery of the runner’s high. In extreme and stressful situations, such as maximum performance in sports, the brain releases these neuropeptides. The effect of the body’s wonder chemicals is similar to drugs – You feel completely happy and energetic. The reason for this process is simple: It is a natural defence mechanism. The endorphins relieve pain quickly and effectively. At the same time, the “thrill” is motivation for new maximum performances.
Continuous training as precondition
Now ambitious athletes might be tempted to push themselves harder on the track. But be careful: “Forcing” a runner’s high at all costs applies neither to the athletic spirit, nor healthy training. Not every athlete can reach this condition. Many runners never find their way
to the ultimate adrenaline kick. In order to even approach this region, you need consistent and controlled training. The JogStyle supports you through this phase. With provided data like running distance, time and speed, you can monitor your personal performance development – The basis for reaching maximum performance in sports, and maybe even the runner’s high.
